A very popular topic after arriving in Spain is the application for the N.I.E number. Anyone that wants to live here should get necessarily a N.I.E number. This counts as the personal identification in Germany and it is needed for many things. If you want to work here, it is mandatory to get a N.I.E number. The same applies if you want to buy a car or open a bank account, the Número de Identificación de Extranjero is always required. You can apply for the N.I.E number in the nearest police station and it costs about € 6.70, but make sure it is the national police and not the local one. The following documents are necessary for this application:

  • The original identity card or passport.

  • Photocopy of the identity document on a DIN A4 page, where both sides are on the same page of the photocopy.

  • Completed form (EX-14) for the application of the N.I.E. The form must be completed in Spanish!

  • You can be asked to justify your reasons for the application, but this is extremely unlikely. In this case, it is better to bring a copy of the employment contract or of a title deed.

In the Spanish departments, pay cash is no longer available. After the successful acceptance of the application, you will be sent to the nearest bank with a payment order of the 6.70 euros previously mentioned. In Spain, every bank is obliged to receive money in cash and to fill the payment order. In this case, it is not necessary to open a bank account. Then you must go back to the department with the completed payment order. Depending on the department and the workload, the process lasts between two and eight weeks.
